A downloadable plug-in is needed to use the Virtual Fairfax application.  There are two options available: TerraExplorer Viewer 6.1 and TerraExplorer Viewer 5.13.

TerraExplorer Viewer 6.1 is the preferred choice for users that wish to take advantage of the latest 3-D buildings formats.   The system requirements for TerraExplorer Viewer 6.1, however, have significantly increased over what is needed for TerraExplorer Viewer 5.13.  For users who are unable to meet the TerraExplorer Viewer 6.1 system requirements, or have a less than ideal user experience, may choose to download TerraExplorer Viewer 5.13.

Mozilla Firefox Users

New plug-in being supported

Virtual Fairfax has been upgraded to support new enhancements to 3-D building and terrain rendering.   To take advantage of the improvements, users must upgrade their TerraExplorer Viewer plug-in to version 6.1.   Since system requirements for the newer plug-in have significantly increased, Virtual Fairfax will continue to support users using the 5.13 version of TerraExplorer Viewer.

Virtual Fairfax Features

Virtual Fairfax Display

This powerful new application allows you to discover Fairfax County through several advanced functions:

  • Interactively explore the county in three-dimensions and six-degrees of motion
  • See hundreds of very realistic 3-D buildings in several commercial corridors
  • Take dynamic tours of the county (historic sites or commercial areas)
  • View terrain and the latest aerial imagery
  • Search for addresses, schools, parks, and county places
  • Easily link to other Fairfax County data like detailed neighborhood reports in My Neighborhood, Tax Administration assessment information from the real estate tax assessment information site, and land development information in LDSNet
  • Add your own building models (KML format) to the Fairfax County landscape
  • Turn map layers on and off such as parcel boundaries, streets, and historic sites
  • Draw shapes and add text to the map
  • Export map scenes and create web links to places in the map


System Requirements

There are now two versions of the required TerraExplorer Viewer plug-in that are being supported in Virtual Fairfax - 5.13 and 6.1.   The system requirements are significantly different for each version.

TerraExplorer Viewer 5.13 System Requirements:

  • Operating System - Windows 98/2000/Me/XP/Vista/7 (other operating systems such as Macintosh are not supported)
  • System Memory - 512MB RAM (1024MB or more recommended)
  • Video Card - 64MB of memory (128MB or more recommended)
  • Internet Connection - Broadband connection recommended
  • Browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher should be installed on machine. Virtual Fairfax can run on more recent versions of FireFox, Opera, or Safari, but it calls Internet Explorer from within the browser window.

TerraExplorer Viewer 6.1 System Requirements:

  • Operating System - Windows XP/Vista/7
  • System Memory - 1GB RAM (4GB or more recommended)
  • Video Card - 128MB of memory (512MB or more recommended). A video card with pixel shader v3.0 and vertex shader v3.0 is required for the display of dynamic water effects, animated cloud map, and sky texture.
  • Internet Connection - Broadband connection recommended
  • Browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher should be installed on machine. Virtual Fairfax can run on more recent versions of FireFox, Opera, or Safari, but it calls Internet Explorer from within the browser window.
